Squirrely Flat Horn

Squirrely Flat Horn

Ain't nothing that'll make you appreciate civilization more than eatin' something that lives in your attic. Some folks say squirrels are nothing more than tree rats with better public relations, but I disagree; I believe they are also quite delicious!

This little horn is perfect for carrying just enough powder so you can make your own batch of burgoo! If you're unfamiliar with what that is, it's a dish that was made by the hundreds of gallons at a time. An entire village would come together with the ingredients. Here's a description from "Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper from October 6, 1888 (p119):

"It is known that the boiling process goes on for days, and it is suspected that green corn, tomatoes, carrots, potatoes, squirrels, pigeons, chickens, and choice lots of lamb and beef are boiled up until nothing but the quintessence of all that is good remains. At any rate, there is not one particle of solid substance left. The meat is boiled down until only a delicate skein of tissue remains, and burgoo in true barbeque fashion is drunk from a tin cup."

No need to worry about picking out the bones!

  • Caring for your powder horn.

Horn items are susceptible to moth and beetle damage. The best thing you can do to avoid this damage is simply to fill it with black powder and use it. If you plan to store your horn, you might be tempted to put it in a box and tuck it away on the top shelf next to the extra towels in the second bedroom where it's good and dry. Giving in to this temptation, may not be a sin, but it's pretty close. You'll be storing up your treasure where moth doth corrupt. You see, worms prefer to dine in the darkness. Instead, when you ain't using it, hang it up on display and let it shine for everyone to see. But be forewarned: they will be bound to ask, "where did you get that powder horn?" And you can say, "from K. Carter, hornsmith, at KC-Hornworks.com."

One last thing: It's always kinda nice to give your powder horn a name. It's just one more way of showing your horn that you really do care.
