Reproduction Tennessee Style Banded Horn

Reproduction Tennessee Style Banded Horn

This one here has lived on my shelf longer than it ought--kinda like a bad roommate that don't buy groceries but has outlived three of my house plants. I thought about keeping it one time; I had started treating it like an emotional support dust collector. Eventually, I came to my senses and marked the price down.

Don't get me wrong. It's a real nice horn. It's 12" across and 16" along its double curve. It can be worn on either side. And the body is almost as clear as an L.A. sky at 6pm, making it easy to see how much powder you got left.

While the bone tip is pinned, this horn still a breeze to fill. Its 2.75"-dia. base plug is fitted with a screw finial. And if you think that's a solid hunk of hardwood on that butt end, you'd be mistaken. It's hollow so that you can put even more powder in it. Given this horn's size, you might be better off filling your Kenworth with diesel than you would be topping this thing off with black powder.

Anyway, this horn would be great for reenacting folk. It's looking for a good home, and it's priced to sell.

  • Caring for your powder horn.

Horn items are susceptible to moth and beetle damage. The best thing you can do to avoid this damage is simply to fill it with black powder and use it. If you plan to store your horn, you might be tempted to put it in a box and tuck it away on the top shelf next to the extra towels in the second bedroom where it's good and dry. Giving in to this temptation, may not be a sin, but it's pretty close. You'll be storing up your treasure where moth doth corrupt. You see, worms prefer to dine in the darkness. Instead, when you ain't using it, hang it up on display and let it shine for everyone to see. But be forewarned: they will be bound to ask, "where did you get that powder horn?" And you can say, "from K. Carter, hornsmith, at KC-Hornworks.com."

One last thing: It's always kinda nice to give your powder horn a name. It's just one more way of showing your horn that you really do care.
