This is a genuine antique horn box.

These little horn boxes were produced by the thousands during the 1800s. These were made by first softening the horn boiling it and heating it to "the melting temperature of lead." The horn material was then pressed into a mold and allowed to cool to form two halves. The halves were then screwed and glued together.

They were made to carry a variety of things, such as coins, pills, the tooth you just lost when you got kicked in the mouth by your horse, snuff, or maybe your personal supply of laudanum. This box measures 2.625" x 1.5" x 0.75".
