Clever Backwoods Horn

Clever Backwoods Horn

SKU: 2603

This here horn is inspired by an ol' one I saw at auction. I mentioned it to my huntin' buddy, and well...he done outbid me! I ain't never again gonna loan him money!

At first gander, you might think this is a simple horn to be carried by a simple feller. But just like ol' grandaddy used to say, "a robe don't make a monk, and a beard don't make a sage." While this here horn looks simple on the outside, it ain't so on the inside. It has a cooterhull hidden behind its black walnut butt. It ain't all that secret, but it sure is clever -- a cubby big enough to hide several lead balls, an extra flint or two, some wadd'n, as well as a chaw if yer a chewer.

This here horn is 9 inches across as the crow flies; 10 inches if ya take the scenic route around the bend. The butt, with Its hand whittled dovetailed slide, ain't much bigger than a couple inches across. It's got a real purdy faceting that runs 'bout halfway down the body to its spout. Can be carried on the right or left -- whichever is to your liking.

Some horns are too purdy to carry. This'n ain't. A clever horn for a clever feller (or gal!).

  • Caring for your powder horn.

Horn items are susceptible to moth and beetle damage. The best thing you can do to avoid this damage is simply to fill it with black powder and use it. If you plan to store your horn, you might be tempted to put it in a box and tuck it away on the top shelf next to the extra towels in the second bedroom where it's good and dry. Giving in to this temptation, may not be a sin, but it's pretty close. You'll be storing up your treasure where moth doth corrupt. You see, worms prefer to dine in the darkness. Instead, when you ain't using it, hang it up on display and let it shine for everyone to see. But be forewarned: they will be bound to ask, "where did you get that powder horn?" And you can say, "from K. Carter, hornsmith, at KC-Hornworks.com."

One last thing: It's always kinda nice to give your powder horn a name. It's just one more way of showing your horn that you really do care.
